King praises "powerhouse" McKay and "frightening" Cripps

2019-04-22T13:15+10:00

Two-time North Melbourne premiership player David King says Carlton duo Harry McKay and Patrick Cripps were the keys to Carlton’s memorable 44-point win over the Bulldogs on Sunday.

McKay starred with four goals and 20 disposals while Cripps dominated with a game-high 37 disposals and 16 contested possessions.

King says Carlton's move to make McKay the deepest forward rather than Williamstown recruit Michael Gibbons was a master stroke.

“They’ve allowed McKay just to star inside forward 50,” the North Melbourne great told SEN’s Whateley.

“What a powerhouse. Everyone talks about the goals but the way he’s doing it is so strong.

“I hear Garry and Tim talk about players with presence a lot.

“They talk about forwards with presence.

“I don’t know if anyone in the competition has got more presence than Harry McKay right now.

“What a figure he is in that forward 50.”

Cripps’ 37-possession game is no surprise to King, who is extremely impressed by the tenacity of the Carlton co-captain.

“The form and the consistency of Patrick Cripps is frightening,” he said.

“He becomes the incredible hulk when he goes to marvel.

“He just becomes this bull. Eleven clearances and they’re not just clearances, they’re opposition packs coming at him.”

The Blues won their first game since July 28 yesterday and cracked the 100-point ledger for the first time in 59 consecutive games.

Their next challenge comes against Hawthorn in Tasmania on Sunday.
