Lions pass another test, downing Swans in the wet

2019-05-04T19:23+10:00

Brisbane has beaten Sydney for the first time in 10 years, holding them off in a wet affair at the Gabba.

The Swans came hard and were favoured by the wet conditions, but the Lions were still able to play at speed and they show their class when it mattered.

Brisbane kicked three goals in the last quarter to break away and win by 22 points.

Here’s everything you need to know!

The Moment: McCluggage kicks the sealer

Hugh McCluggage slotted the winner for the Lions on the run from 50, a classy kick given the wet conditions.

Brisbane led for most of the day and had the game on their terms, but couldn’t quite put the Swans away.

McCluggage’s goal in the latter half of the final term gave the Lions a 21-point lead and gave them a win in a game they may have lost this time last year if presented with the same challenge.

The Talking Point: Hipwood in MRO strife?

Brisbane key forward Eric Hipwood could be in trouble for arriving late in a marking contest in the third quarter.

Hipwood went to spoil a kick deep inside 50, but collected Jake Lloyd high and a fraction late, resulting in a 50m penalty being paid.

While there was no malice in the hit, the MRO will look at it. The probable outcome is a fine, given it likely will be graded high contact, low impact and careless conduct.

Then again, we never really know, do we.

What’s next?

Sydney heads back to the SCG next Friday night, taking on Essendon. The two teams have put on some thrillers in the past and the Swans are desperate for a win.

The Lions meanwhile take on the Western Bulldogs down at Mars Stadium. It’s a long road trip for Brisbane and they’ll need to bring their best with them to Ballarat.
