Kenedna notches second Group 1, Zoustyle remains unbeaten

2019-05-18T16:05+10:00

Thanks to a peach of ride from star jockey John Allen, Kenedna stormed home from the back to take out Saturday's Group 1 Doomben Cup, making it two wins at the top level from her past three starts.

Allen weaved a passage through the field soon after runners turned for home and Kenedna found the front 150 metres from home.

Life Less Ordinary, under Jason Collett, threw out a late challenge, but the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained mare, which won the G1 Coolmore Legacy Stakes on Day 2 of The Championships, was strong on the line.

Kenedna finished ninth behind Life Less Ordinary, beaten 7.45 lengths, in the G2 Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast last time out, but that was on a Heavy 10.

Kenedna's win deprived Jason Collett a long-awaited maiden G1 success.

"This is unbelievable, God I love coming here," Maher told Sky Racing.

"Johnny, what a ride – super.

"This was always her target race; winning the Coolmore Legacy was a bit of a bonus.

"I'm just rapt to be able to train horses of this calibre."

Roughie Sixties Groove finished third, while Gem Song was fourth.

Earlier, boom three-year-old Zoustyle maintained his unbeaten record with a stylish victory in the JRA Plate.

The Tony Gollan-trained gelding beat key rival Plague Stone by a touch over a length, clocking 1:09.02 for the 1200-metre gallop.

Zoustyle now boasts six wins from as many starts.

"Yeah, gee, he was impressive," Gollan said.

"He looked pretty good, looked pretty comfortable doing it.

"He's just a really impressive horse; there's more to come from him, too."

The G1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m at Eagle Farm on June 7), for which he is the pre-post favourite, is an option for Zoustyle, but Gollan said, "it's definitely not definite".
