Blues Head of Footy addresses GWS belting

2019-05-20T08:35+10:00

Carlton Head of Football Brad Lloyd was on the front foot this morning after his side’s 93-point loss to GWS, saying there’s a number of areas where the club needs to be better.

Blues coach Brendon Bolton has come under pressure after two big losses in three weeks, but Lloyd feels the heat should be on the whole club, not just the coach.

“A performance like yesterday, it can spread throughout the whole playing group, it was that poor, so Brendon comes under pressure, we all do,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“You can’t sugar-coat it. It was a very disappointing performance right from the first quarter. We got smashed at the contest and got annihilated at the centre bounce in the first quarter so I’d say we’re disappointed and have a lot of work to do.

“Throughout the year we’ve been competitive in a lot of games, but haven’t got the job done, but yesterday was a really poor performance, no way around that.”

Lloyd broke down what was said in the rooms immediately after the game.

“We had a really strong discussion on the why. Seven of the nine games we’ve been really competitive … but we just talked about quarter one getting absolutely hammered and when that happens you end up disconnected as a group,” he said.

“The discussion in the rooms was all about why does that happen and how can we step up in those moments and show more leadership throughout the group and the club.

“We’re not close enough. We need to work on a lot of things. We need to be more brutal in the contest. I think we need to work really hard on his skill level. It’s an area we need to smash into as a playing group and coaching group.”
