David King ranks the three coaches North should call first

2019-05-25T12:45+10:00

North Melbourne legend David King has put together his hit list of candidates his old club should call as Brad Scott’s replacement – and also put together his ‘dream team’ of a coaching staff.

Scott is set to coach his final game as Kangaroos coach this afternoon against the Bulldogs and King believes the Roos could have the money to target whoever they wish.

Note: Alastair Clarkson was taken out of the equation as he’s the obvious first person to call.

Call 1: Adam Simpson (West Coast coach)

“I think you are obligated to call Eagles coach Adam Simpson,” King told SEN’s Crunch Time.

“He knows the place, he’s had terrific success, he’s had an amazing start to his coaching career when you look at the numbers and what he’s been able to achieve with a club many said was going nowhere three years ago.

“The way they place is consistent, they have a brand already, he’s got a great rapport with people, he’s a club legend, Kangas fans love him.

“That’s my first call.”

Call 2: Michael Voss (Port Adelaide assistant coach)

“For me, I’m thinking who’s a North Melbourne person? I’m thinking Michael Voss,” King said.

“I’m thinking that’s a great fit. He was at a club that was struggling up north in the late 90s and then they just went bang.

“He became the leader of men.”

Power legend Kane Cornes feels North could grab Voss immediately if that was the direction they chose to head in.

“You could get Voss tomorrow I reckon. I don’t think there’s any obstacle stopping him,” Cornes said.

“If you want him, he’s your man.”

Call 3: Ross Lyon (Fremantle coach)

“I’m saying, Ross, we need someone with the iron fist. Come over, rule the club, straighten us up,” he said.

“And there’s other people I want to put around Ross, because they’ve got the money.

“Ideally I’m going with some kind of succession plan. I’m thinking a (Melbourne assistant) Craig Jennings type coach.

“There isn’t a course or an avenue he hasn’t explored. He’s got the best CV of the next wave of guys.

“If I really want to have this perfect and I can’t get Simpson or Voss, I’m bringing in Ross Lyon and I’m attaching Jennings as head of strategy.

“And then I’m going to get Blake Caracella as ball movement and I’m going to get Matthew Scarlett as the defensive coach.

“And then to round it off, we’re going to go and get Hamish Ogilvie from the Crows.

“I’m sick of hearing we don’t have picks in the top 10 and you can’t have success if that’s the case. Look at what he’s done with picks in the 30s or 40s or 50s. He’s just going and getting the right person.”
