Gunston dominates as Hawks shut the Power down

2019-05-25T16:21+10:00

Keeping Port Adelaide scoreless for a quarter, Hawthorn has taken the Power down in a defensive showcase in Launceston.

The Hawks restricted the Power to 49 points for the game, doing the damage early thanks to a dominant Jack Gunston performance.

Ricky Henderson meanwhile continues to be one of the most improved players in the competition, finishing with 37 disposals and 11 marks.

There was a bit of feeling in the game early with a couple of ex-Power players coming up against their old side.

Here’s everything you need to know!

The Star: Jack Gunston

In a low scoring game, Jack Gunston emerged as the difference between the two teams, kicking six goals.

He kicked three goals in just over a quarter as the Hawks were creating separation, but also bobbed up when his side needed one in the fourth quarter.

Gunston hasn’t been a big goal scorer this year, but his clean hands and accurate kicking showed that when put in the spearhead position, he can get it done.

Without Mitchell Lewis, Jarryd Roughead or another genuine key position player, the Gunston show was the difference.

The Talking Point: Chad Wingard versus Port Adelaide

Chad Wingard’s split from Port Adelaide was a rocky affair, with neither party seemingly happy with how it played out.

In his first game against his old side, the heat was up early and Wingard got the job done as one of Hawthorn’s best few on the day.

Wingard finished with 20 disposals, six marks and two goal assists.

What’s next?

Hawthorn faces a side that has quickly become a bogey team for them next weekend in Brisbane up at the Gabba. The Lions beat them twice last year and the Hawks will want revenge on Luke Hodge and Chris Fagan this time around.

Port Adelaide meanwhile heads to China to take on St Kilda on Sunday afternoon. The Power are 2-0 at Jiangwan Stadium and will be looking to rebound with a win before heading into their bye.
