Why GWS sought advice from AFL great Carey

2019-05-27T16:12+10:00

Greater Western Sydney coach Leon Cameron says the visit from AFL great Wayne Carey was beneficial in the club's bid to turn around their MCG fortunes.

Having won just twice in 16 attempts at the ‘G, the Giants broke their hoodoo at the venue courtesy of a 26-point win over Melbourne on Sunday.

Carey - a two-time premiership captain with North Melbourne – spent time with the club’s forwards and leadership group, before providing advice about ways of succeeding at the home of football.

“We had Wayne up during the week. It was more the forwards point of view and also our leaders,” Cameron told SEN’s Whateley.

“He has done it all as a captain and as a key player ahead of the ball when he was playing, so we wanted to just talk about his presence and managing that and playing on the big stage and doing the little things really, really well.”

Cameron believes the time was right to invite the seven-time All-Australian to the club’s headquarters following their loss to Hawthorn in Round 8.

“We put our hand up two weeks ago when we were really disappointing against Hawthorn and they played a really good brand and we really struggled which probably magnified the loss because it was the MCG as well," he added.

“We really wanted to test our players out and put our entire footy club under the microscope of travelling away and putting pressure on ourselves to perform against a good team — we knew Melbourne were coming off a good three-week patch. We really wanted to test ourselves out.

“It was a significant game and we didn’t want to shy away from that.”

Next up for GWS is a home match against Gold Coast at Giants Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
