Team Whispers: Pies trio & two Brownlow Medallists a chance to return

2019-05-29T08:30+10:00

Which changes could your side make this weekend? We look at all the team news, rumours and whispers here!

Here’s our game by game breakdown.

North Melbourne v Richmond

The Tigers could regain skipper Trent Cotchin from a seven-week hamstring injury on Friday night, assuming he gets through training today

However, fellow midfielder Kane Lambert (Achilles) appears set to miss again, while Tom Lynch (corked calf) should play.

It’s hard to see the Roos making any unforced changes, but new coach Rhyce Shaw could put his own stamp on the side.

Aaron Hall continues to impress in the VFL and could be one to return.

Collingwood v Fremantle

Collingwood is once again sweating on Jordan de Goey, Darcy Moore and Mason Cox’s availabilities.

Moore (ankle) and de Goey (shin) will need to prove their fitness at training, but would be straight swaps for Jack Madgen and Daniel Wells (knee).

Wells is set for three months on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in the third quarter against the Swans.

Cox has not played since Round 6 with a lower leg injury, while Taylor Adams will miss another three weeks with a groin injury.

As for the Dockers, they could very easily go in unchanged after the win over Brisbane. Griffin Logue and Travis Colyer have pushed for selection in the WAFL.

GWS v Gold Coast

The Suns will lose Ben Ainsworth, with the young star suffering a foot injury requiring surgery.

George Horlin-Smith and Will Brodie would be among the most likely replacements for him.

As for the Giants, Stephen Coniglio could miss after suffered a corked thigh. Jackson Hately dominated in the NEAFL and could be recalled in his place.

Geelong v Sydney

Patrick Dangerfield will return from a foot injury in place of the suspended Gary Ablett in what will be a straightforward swap.

Cam Guthrie is in doubt with a hip complaint, with his brother Zach, Scott Selwood, Esava Ratugolea and Sam Simpson among the club’s depth pushing for a spot.

Captain Josh Kennedy will miss for the Swans after suffering a knee injury, but veteran Jarrad McVeigh could return after missing since Round 3 with a quad strain.

Daniel Menzel booted five in the NEAFL and is pushing his case for selection.

Brisbane v Hawthorn

Jack Scrimshaw will miss up to six weeks with a knee injury suffered in the win over Port Adelaide, but Kaiden Brand’s 19-mark VFL effort provides an easy swap for the Hawks.

Mitch Lewis should also be available after missing with concussion and he’ll likely replace Marc Pittonet.

Rhys Mathieson returns from suspension for the Lions, but they don’t have an obvious out for him.

Lewis Taylor or Cam McCarthy could make way for the midfielder, but Brisbane could easily go unchanged.

Melbourne v Adelaide

Christian Salem, Nathan Jones and Alex Neal-Bullen will have to prove they’re right to return from concussions.

Michael Hibberd meanwhile will have to do a lot to prove he’s ready to go after hurting his collarbone in Round 8. Steven May will play in the VFL after recovering from a groin injury.

Jake Lever, who has had a minor ankle issue of late, will be available for selection if he gets through training today. He has been sidelined since Round 11 last year after rupturing his ACL.

Sam Weideman has impressed in the VFL for Casey and could have earned himself a recall.

The Crows could get a trio of players back from injury with Matt Crouch (hip), Tom Lynch (hamstring) and David Mackay (illness) all expected to be right.

Bryce Gibbs and Josh Jenkins continue to put their hands up in the SANFL, while Richard Douglas is also in the mix. Ruckman Sam Jacobs will return through the SANFL.

St Kilda v Port Adelaide

Scott Lycett is a lock to return for the Power, while Tom Rockliff and Ryan Burton have travelled to China, but remain in doubt with hamstring issues.

Ruck duo Peter Ladhams and Billy Frampton will likely both make way.

As for the Saints, Jarryn Geary remains a chance to play after having surgery on a badly corked quad, while Hunter Clark and Nick Coffield were both excellent in the VFL.

Essendon v Carlton

Jake Stringer will miss with a hamstring issue in a big loss for the Bombers, but midfielder Dylan Shiel remains an outside chance to play with his own hammy issues.

David Myers and Dylan Clarke are the likely replacements for the duo, while Mark Baguley could be considered after kicking two goals in the VFL.

Mitch McGovern could miss for the Blues with an ankle injury, but they could also simply choose to omit him after a few week’s of struggles. Dale Thomas will miss with a club-imposed suspension.

Youngster Paddy Kerr would be the likely replacement for McGovern, though Alex Fasolo could be the one if Carlton wishes to go smaller.

Angus Schumacher could make his debut in place of Thomas, while Darcy Lang would be another who could be in line for his first game of 2019.

West Coast v Western Bulldogs

Mitch Wallis and Hayden Crozier will not travel to Perth to take on the Eagles, while Ryan Gardner will debut in the same week he was picked up by the Dogs in the mid-season rookie draft.

Lukas Webb impressed in the VFL with 27 disposals, while Tory Dickson kicked three goals.

Lewis Jetta will slot back in for West Coast after suspension, likely in place of Jackson Nelson.
