Have the Brisbane Lions dodged a bullet with Beams?

2019-06-06T10:24+10:00

SEN Breakfast’s Tim Watson is of the belief that the Brisbane Lions have “dodged a bullet” with Dayne Beams.

The midfielder, 29, departed Brisbane for Collingwood in last year’s trade period but has experienced a difficult start to his second stint with the Magpies and has now succumbed to a hip injury which is expected to sideline him for the remainder of the season.

The Lions landed 26-year-old Lachie Neale in a separate trade from Fremantle on the same day last October and he has experienced a stellar beginning at his new club, while Beams has failed to deliver.

Asked if he thinks Collingwood knew Beams had a hip problem when they got him back to the club, Watson said: “I don’t know whether it would have revealed itself when they did the medical.

“I don’t know whether or not it was impacting on his ability last year to play.

“They dodged a bit of a bullet didn’t they, Brisbane.

“They got Lachie Neale in, obviously, who’s been great. Beams left, Collingwood hasn’t received the same playing ability that the Brisbane Lions did by recruiting Neale.

“So they’ve done really well, the Brisbane Lions.”

Co-host Garry Lyon added: “I think they’d (Brisbane) be very, very comfortable with where that trade’s at.”

In the trade, the Pies received Beams and two third-round draft picks while the Lions landed a first-round and a fourth-round pick plus a 2019 first-round selection.
