Cornes reveals why "favourite son" should coach Carlton

2019-06-07T10:40+10:00

Kane Cornes believes Adelaide assistant coach Scott Camporeale would be the perfect replacement for sacked Carlton coach Brendon Bolton.

Camporeale has been in the coaching ranks since 2007, serving assistant roles at Essendon and Adelaide, as well as becoming the Crows interim coach in 2015 following the tragic death of Phil Walsh.

Cornes revealed that the Crows assistant coach has put his hand up to be Carlton’s next head coach.

“I just love the idea of getting favourite sons back in to coach a footy club,” he told SEN's The Captain’s Run.

“After being a reluctant applicant to past vacant coaching jobs due to business and family reasons, Carlton legend Scott Camporeale will put his hand up to replace sacked coach Brendon Bolton.

“Now that he’s signalled his intentions, Camporeale to me appears to be the best credentialled out of all the untested coaches currently putting their hand up for the top job.

“He played 233 games at the Blues and was a vital part of the 1995 premiership side.

“His competitiveness and desire to never be beaten were fundamental pillars of his successful playing career.”

Cornes believes the transition from Camporeale’s playing career to coaching career has been seamless, particularly when he was dealt the task of taking over from Walsh.

“As the Crows midfield coach, they were always dominant in contested football, scoring from stoppage and putting pressure on the opposition,” he added.

“He coached the last 11 games of 2015 including two finals and a win over the Western Bulldogs at the MCG and his final win-loss count recorded seven wins and four losses.

“He was able to galvanise a devastated football club and a vulnerable playing group who at times were questioning their motivation to play the game.”
