Former Saint rues Gehrig momentum shift in 2004 Preliminary Final defeat

2019-06-09T11:00+10:00

Former St Kilda utility Jason Blake still rues the heartbreaking Preliminary Final loss to eventual premiers Port Adelaide in 2004.

The Saints went down by six points in a thrilling contest and Blake believes the fan invasion after Fraser Gehrig kicked his 100th goal halted the team’s momentum.

“That 2004 Preliminary Final against Port Adelaide where we lost by six points … that game will be etched into my mind. If we went on the next week, we knew we had Brisbane’s measure," Blake told This Is Your Sporting Life.

"We were a number of goals up, we had the momentum and that’s when Fraser Gehrig kicked his 100th goal, and it felt like from that point on the momentum shifted towards Port Adelaide, they played one of the best quarters I’ve seen.

"Gavin Wanganeen kicked three goals and they clinched it by five points. During those early years, we had some amazing players, and that belief was really starting to build."

History repeated itself the following year, with St Kilda falling at the same hurdle to eventual premiers Sydney by 31 points.
