Home town heroes towel last year's premiers as Buddy stars

It was a hot ball in Sydney, and the Swans were even hotter as they ran out 45-point victors over last year's Grand Final winners the West Coast Eagles.

Lance Franklin was back to his platinum best, booting four goals in the first three quarters and setting up a decisive win for the Swans at home (the forward finished with five goals).

It was a tight tussle to begin with, the Swans only five points up at quarter time. It was their polished ball movement that saw them stretch their lead ever-greater as the game wore on, with Jake Lloyd, Dane Rampe and Luke Parker starring across halfback and through the middle.

George Hewett's reputation continues to grow, with a solid 29 disposal game. West Coast's best were Andrew Gaff (28 disposals) and Dom Sheed (26 touches and four tackles) but their big men were down, especially Jeremy McGovern.

The Gov was soundly beaten by Franklin, frequently led to the ball and outmarked.

Tom Papley was also lively for the home team, finishing with an amazing five goals two behinds to go with 27 disposals - reward for his constant effort and harassing play across the entire ground.

The Eagles seem to lack answers for the Swans' forwards, and will lick their wounds over the bye next week. The Swans also have the bye, returning the following week to play the Hawks at the SCG.
