Collingwood defender Jeremy Howe conceded a contentious free kick after a taking a mark with his studs up during the first quarter against Melbourne.
The high-flying Pie extended his leg and placed the studs of his right boot into the back of Demons forward Tom McDonald.
Howe’s action was deemed a free kick under a recent new rule that allows umpires to penalise players for going studs up into an opponent’s back in a marking contest.
The rule was introduced after GWS star Toby Greene went studs up in a front on position in a marking contest last season.
“That’s not why that rule was introduced,” Essendon great Tim Watson told Channel Seven.
“That was just a wrong decision.”
