St Kilda VFL coach gives Hannebery and Carlisle updates

Sandringham coach Aaron Hamill believes Dan Hannebery has done enough to be in the mix for selection this weekend.

The high-profile St Kilda recruit has now played two games in the VFL after dealing with various injuries and Hamill is happy with his progress.

“Dan, two weeks ago against Coburg, was really good. He got 23 disposals and was able to bore in as an insider,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“We wanted to see him use his run more yesterday which can be hard with Trevor Barker (Oval) being a small ground.

“He impressed again (yesterday). The bye didn’t come at a great time for him, but he was able to get solid track work leading into this game.

“He’s pulling up really well and there’ll certainly be a discussion this week about AFL selection.

“So far he’s getting through the games well, he’s getting run into his legs and he was almost at full minutes yesterday.”

From what Hamill has seen, he feels Hannebery has worked beyond the issues that delayed his start to the season.

“He’s covering the ground really well. In terms of pre and post stoppage, which is his go, he seems to be covering the ground really well. He’s making very good decisions with the footy and we know his leadership is pretty solid as well,” he said.

“He’s ticking all those boxes. His ability to get up and back and help defence and then get up the ground, that’s what we’re seeing.

“I’d be really comfortable with where he’s at and he’s only going to get better from here.”

Saints defender Jake Carlisle is also with the Zebras, finding his touch after a serious back injury.

“Jake was really good. He’s had a great eight-week training block and he’s so confident in his own ability and ability to read the play,” he said.

“We played him mostly down back, but we threw him up forward once Max (King) went down. His ability to read the play and catch it and generate ball use for us was really pleasing.

“He was able to get through the game well and apart from a couple of bruises he pulled up well.”
