Demons targeting ex-Power fitness guru

2019-06-19T08:41+10:00

Melbourne football manager Josh Mahoney has confirmed the club is targeting former Port Adelaide fitness guru Darren Burgess.

The Demons have had a lot of issues with injuries this year and Burgess was a big part of Port Adelaide’s turnaround in the early years under Ken Hinkley.

Mahoney confirmed on SEN Breakfast they were beginning negotiations with him.

“We’ve taken this opportunity to take a look at our high performance structure and we’ve made some changes in there for the second half of the year and put some people into some interim roles,” Mahoney said.

“We’ve got some good internal people, but we’re looking for people with experience and Darren’s experienced in AFL land and overseas.

“He’s got some mutual friends within the club so there has been some discussion. But he’s still very much deciding what he wants to do.”

Burgess previously spent time with Liverpool between 2010 and 2012 as their head of fitness and conditioning.

He recently left Arsenal in a similar role after two years.
