How potential Coniglio trade could be affected by Tim Kelly

2019-06-21T11:45+10:00

AFL Hall of Famer Terry Wallace believes where GWS midfielder Stephen Coniglio lands could depend on whether Tim Kelly leaves Geelong or not.

Coniglio is out of contract at the end of the year and according to SEN Time On’s Sam McClure, Geelong, West Coast, Carlton and Hawthorn are the clubs interested in the Giants star, should he choose to depart.

Wallace was asked to rank which club he would choose if he were Coniglio.

He said that if Kelly goes to West Coast, Coniglio should go to Geelong, but if Kelly stays at the Cats, Coniglio should head to the Eagles.

Wallace then explained why Hawthorn would be his next option.

“I’d have Hawthorn next,” he told The Match Committee.

“Why? The club. Not the position, not necessarily the list, not necessarily anything else.

"But we know what they’re building, we know what they’re about to build, we know what they’ve been able to do in years gone passed.”

If Coniglio was to land at Carlton, Wallace says this would be a major boost for the club, but believes their current form may be a deterrent.

“I’d still rank Carlton in the third spot,” he said.

“Why? Because they haven’t done it yet.

“I think they can, I think they probably will but they haven’t so if I’m the manager, I’m not sending my player to the club until I know that they’re ready to roll.”
