Is the reversal of free kicks too harsh?

2019-06-26T11:55+10:00

Bob Murphy has raised the question about free kick reversals perhaps being too harsh a penalty.

In last weekend’s clash between Melbourne and Fremantle at the MCG, Demons co-captain Nathan Jones was involved in a reversed free kick as well as a 50-metre penalty which resulted in a Dockers goal at a crucial stage of the game.

While it was inconsequential to the result, as the Demons got up, it was a severe sanction for the action, according to former Western Bulldogs skipper Murphy.

“It’s a neutral ball, then Michael Walters gives the free (away), then Nathan Jones comes in,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“Shouldn’t it just go back to neutral ball?

“It seems like too big a gap. That’s like a two free kick turnaround.

“Ok, Walters free kick against. Jones comes in, bang, bump, bring it back to a neutral ball.”

Murphy feels a ball up would be more warranted than completely reversing the decision.
