Marvel Stadium roof to be closed for rest of season

2019-06-27T12:18+10:00

The AFL has decided to close the Marvel Stadium roof for the remainder of the 2019 season.

Sam McClure revealed on SEN’s Whateley that a decision has been made to shut the roof for day matches following negative feedback from players and broadcasters.

“The AFL executives have just walked out of a meeting and they have decided to close the roof of Marvel Stadium for the rest of the season,” McClure said.

“Day games there, the first of which is this Sunday afternoon at 1:10pm between the Saints and the Tigers. The forecast is 15 (degrees) and sunny at the moment but it will not matter because it will be closed for the rest of the year.

“I think it will be closed permanently but the AFL I think will today announce that they’ll be reviewing that policy at the end of the season.”

There remains five day games at Marvel in the home-and-away season, starting this weekend with St Kilda v Richmond as well as Carlton v Gold Coast (Round 18), Western Bulldogs v Fremantle (Round 19), Essendon v Port Adelaide (Round 20) and St Kilda v Fremantle (Round 21).

McClure raised the potential of a roof closure on SEN's Time On two weeks ago after calls increased for it to be shut.
