Are Hawthorn fans "the biggest fair weather supporters in the AFL"?

2019-06-28T11:35+10:00

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes says Hawthorn fans are the “biggest fair weather supporters in the AFL”.

The criticism comes after the Herald Sun revealed that Hawthorn has blamed a poor 2019 fixture for the club’s lowest home crowds in 13 years.

Cornes thinks it’s ridiculous that Hawks supporters are blaming the fixture and implored them to simply turn up to more games.

“This is the Hawthorn team who claims to have 80,000 members, who has played in 10 out of the last 12 finals fixtures and has won four flags since 2008,” he said on SEN's The Captain’s Run.

“Hawthorn fans, where are you? Do you only come out when you win?

“The team can do no more. You have the best coach in the competition, you’ve played in 10 out of the last 12 finals series and you are blaming a bad draw on a lack of crowd?

“You mob, in the win against the Giants, had 14,000 people at the MCG on a fine day and you claim to have 80,000 members.

“Hawthorn fans, you should hang your heads in shame.”

The Hawks’ average home attendance could dip below 30,000 for the first time since 2006.

They’ll aim to bounce back from their 19-point loss against Sydney in Round 14 on Saturday at the MCG when they host the West Coast Eagles.
