Sheahan reveals his player of the decade

2019-07-05T08:44+10:00

Veteran AFL journalist Mike Sheahan has named Geelong captain Joel Selwood as his player of the decade.

Selwood, 31, is a three-time Best and Fairest winner, a three-time premiership player and a six-time All-Australian in a decorated 284-game career with the Cats.

He was also voted the AFL’s most courageous player on four occasions, epitomising his fearless nature and ability to lead by example.

When asked to reveal his player of the decade on SEN Breakfast, Sheahan replied: “Joel Selwood … fractionally ahead of (Scott) Pendlebury.”

“The Selwood performance over that period is unbelievable. He’s won three Best and Fairests, second twice, third once and fifth once.

“The other thing that convinced me is that when there’s a big moment in the game or a big game, that’s when Selwood is at his best.

“When the moment demands for someone to do something, it’s Selwood.”

Geelong selected Selwood from the Bendigo Pioneers with pick No.7 in the 2006 AFL Draft.
