It's time for Mason Cox to back up his Prelim performance: Dal Santo

2019-07-08T07:27+10:00

Collingwood forward Mason Cox has struggled since returning to the side from a lower leg injury.

He was particularly quiet in Friday night’s loss to Hawthorn, finishing with six disposals, three marks and the solitary goal.

Nick Dal Santo believes it’s time for people to move on from his dominant Preliminary Final performance against Richmond.

“I’m almost sick of hearing about his Prelim. We’ve all had a good game,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“I don’t know if Mason Cox is as well, but I am sick of hearing what he did in the Prelim.

“It’s not the Prelim anymore. That performance was fantastic, was it one out of the box? Recent form says yes.”

Dal Santo believes Cox needs to have a greater impact on games for longer periods of time to justify his spot in the side.

“He needs to find a way to be more influential on games. They need to get him in more positions where he can have an impact on it, whether he’s clunking the mark or bringing the smaller players in around him,” he said.

“They need to find a position for him that finds an impact otherwise I can’t see how he plays.

“I’m putting it on both of them (Cox and Nathan Buckley). It’s a coaching and positional situation as much as it is Mason doing his job.”

Collingwood faces West Coast in Perth on Friday night and a loss would mean three losses in a row for the struggling Pies.

Their key forward depth will be tested if Cox is dropped, with Ben Reid suffering a calf injury in their loss to North Melbourne.
