Hodge to make call on Brisbane future

2019-07-10T12:42+10:00

Luke Hodge will determine whether he plays on in 2020, according to Brisbane CEO Greg Swann.

Hodge’s two-year contract with the Lions is set to expire and remains undecided whether he will extend his decorated AFL career into a 19th season.

“It’s up to him whether he wants to go around again. Initially he said he would play for two (years),” Swann told SEN Mornings.

“He signed for two years we always said we would have a look at it at the end of the year.”

The 35-year-old has made a profound impact since coming out of retirement to join a young Brisbane group in October 2017.

Since his arrival, Chris Fagan’s side have improved year-on-year and look set to play finals for the first time since 2009.

“I’m on the record as saying that was one of the most significant things that happened to our footy club when he chose to come and play here for a couple of years,” Swann said.

“We’d had some problems with people leaving, but it just put a different look on our footy club that someone as decorated as Luke would come.”

Hodge, a four-time premiership player and two-time North Smith Medallist with Hawthorn, has played 338 games since going at pick No.1 in the 2001 super draft.

Brisbane face Port Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday as they continue their hunt for a top-four finish.
