Greene allays Giant injury fear

2019-07-11T10:00+10:00

Gun GWS Giants forward Toby Greene says midfielder Stephen Coniglio should be fit to play this weekend against Richmond.

The injury-riddled Giants counted more casualties after the disappointing 20-point loss to the Lions last weekend with Josh Kelly ruled out for at least three weeks following a calf tear and Coniglio pulling up with a sore knee.

Greene believes the injuries cannot be used as an excuse and suggested his side needed to get back their slick ball movement in order to turn their form around after consecutive defeats.

“I think Cogs (Coniglio) will be alright to go this week,” Greene told SEN Breakfast.

“It has been a frustrating run and you’ve just got to deal with, but it gives other boys an opportunity to play.

“Our ball movement has probably stalled in the last couple of weeks… we need to keep building on it.”

The Giants have since dropped out of the top 4 following losses to the Lions and Essendon and sit in fifth spot at nine wins and six losses, but Greene said he was not too phased by their ladder position.

“As we saw with the Bulldogs a few years ago, they came from seventh and had a few away trips,” Greene added.

“As long as we’re playing the right football, I’ll back us to beat anyone.”

The Giants will look to reverse their form slump as they do battle with the Tigers at the MCG this Sunday from 1:10pm (AEST).
