Cleary's huge trade update on Ellis, Langdon, Goldstein, Greenwood and more

2019-07-12T19:49+10:00

AFL.com.au journalist Mitch Cleary has provided an update on the latest trade news and rumours to this point in the season.

See Cleary’s latest update below:

Brandon Ellis (Richmond)

“This is a fascinating one, it’s a bit of a holding pattern at the moment. He’s parked negotiations until the end of the season, I think North Melbourne and Carlton are both interested,” Cleary told AFL Nation.

“It’s hard to see him staying at Richmond next year. I think it’s long odds he stays at Punt Road. He’s a restricted free agent so that means he’s a top 10 earner right now, he’s nowhere near their top 10 earners right now.

“He’d have to take a pay cut to stay.”

Ed Langdon (Fremantle)

“He’s parked negotiations to the end of the year as well. He’s a Victorian boy, I think this has got a few alarm bells around it for Fremantle.”

“He’s been courted for a number of years by the likes of Melbourne, Collingwood – where his brother Tom plays as well – I think the Dockers are a little worried about this.”

Former Fremantle player Ryan Crowley believes Langdon, who finished fourth in Fremantle’s best and fairest last year, will be back in Victoria next year.

“He’s come on a lot quicker than I expected and he was exactly what the Dockers needed – they needed some young blood.”

“I’d be shocked if he’s at the club next year.”

Freo legend Paul Hasleby agreed saying “I think he’s gone. I think he’s made up his mind”.

Stephen Coniglio (GWS)

“The Giants are still very confident.”

“It’s been four weeks since he’s had that bye period. He’s got everything in front of him to make that decision. I don’t know what’s holding him up.

“Every week this goes on, teams like Carlton, Hawthorn and even West Coast start to get a little more hope that he’ll be joining them.”

Todd Goldstein (North Melbourne) and Paddy Ryder (Port Adelaide)

“It’s hard to see either of these guys staying at their original clubs.”

“I think Goldstein’s more likely to head to St Kilda than anywhere else.”

“Sydney or GWS (for Ryder). Shane Mumford has battled hard, but I don’t think he’s got too many runs left in those legs.”

Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (Essendon)

“There’s still not a great deal of movement on his contract. The Dogs have got some interest there.”

Hugh Greenwood (Adelaide)

“I think the offer from the Crows right now isn’t what he wants and not as forthcoming as hoped.”

“He’s 28 next year and has got some interest from a few clubs, Hawthorn is among them.

“If the Hawks miss out on Stephen Coniglio, I think it might ramp up around Hugh Greenwood.”

Now is the time trade news ramps up

“It’s starting to ramp up now. It’s the under 16 national championships and that might not sound very important, but all the clubs and their list managers get up to the Gold Coast this week and it starts to ramp up around this time.”

“More names are going to emerge over the next few weeks.”
