Liddle confirms Teague still in race for Carlton coaching job

2019-07-13T12:18+10:00

Despite Chris Judd’s suggestions that Carlton wants to appoint a coach with a lot of experience, club CEO Cain Liddle has confirmed caretaker coach David Teague is still in the race for the job.

Teague has coached four games with the Blues since the sacking of Brendon Bolton, picking up two wins and two narrow losses.

Carlton looks a new team under him, kicking over 100 points twice and playing with a speed and freedom not seen under Bolton.

Judd said the club doesn’t want a coach for 2020 with “training wheels on”, but Liddle added that while Judd’s comments are aligned with what the club wants, Teague doesn’t fall in that category.

“I’d think that would be a little bit disrespectful to David. He’s been an assistant coach for about 12 years across four clubs and he’s now got half a year to coach our AFL team as well as having coached VFL,” he told SEN’s Crunch Time.

“I wouldn’t suggest Teague has training wheels, no.

“I didn’t have an issue with what Chris said, it was in complete alignment with the club.”

Liddle said the club would not be rushed in making a decision on the next coach and assures Carlton fans that they are doing everything possible to make the right appointment.

“If it worked, I’d love to give (the members) a running commentary because they deserve it, but obviously that’s impossible,” he said.

“We don’t have a timeframe on when it’ll happen. We won’t be rushed. This is a really important decision to the club.

“What I can assure the members of is that there is a power of work going on in the background to make sure that we fully understand where our current group is and we can slot the right coach in to maximise where that group is going forward.”
