"I didn't think the umps had a great night": Richardson

2019-07-14T12:30+10:00

St Kilda coach Alan Richardson believes some of the umpiring in last night’s 27-point loss against Geelong was “pretty inconsistent”.

The Saints lost the free kick count 26-14 last night, which left Richardson feeling frustrated after the loss at GMHBA Stadium.

"What did we lose free kicks by? A lot I think. I didn't think the umps had a great night," he said.

"It was as much about the non-calls as it was the calls.

"I don't get too caught up with the umpiring, because they make blues and we make blues, but I thought it was pretty inconsistent tonight."

Richardson called on the umpires last week after losing the free kick count against North Melbourne (16-25) in the Saints’ 39-point loss.

The umpiring department sent an umpire to Moorabbin for St Kilda’s training in the lead-up to the Cats clash, but Richardson was again dissatisfied with the officiating standard.

"We had an umpire come to training with us because we gave away seven free kicks in front of goal and it cost us seven goals last week," he said.

"The umpiring department was outstanding there and sent an umpire out to do our match (simulation) and spend some time with the backs because that was their issue.

"So we'll follow up (next week) … we'll just make sure we're coaching the right way."

The Saints will aim to end a four-game losing streak when they face the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium next Sunday.
