How are your club's mid-season recruits performing?

2019-07-16T16:56+10:00

The 13 players taken in the mid-season draft are approaching two months on AFL lists.

Four have made their senior debuts, while others are on the verge of selection.

Here’s how your recruits have been performing:

Pick 1: Josh Deluca (Carlton)

Deluca faced a delayed start with the Blues, arriving at the club with a minor hamstring issue.

He has since played three games in the VFL for the Northern Blues, proving his credentials as a strong inside midfielder.

The 23-year-old has averaged 20 disposals in those games and would be close to a Navy Blue debut.

Pick 2: Mitch Riordan (Gold Coast)

Riordan has been one of Gold Coast’s stronger performers in the NEAFL since arriving at the club.

He’s played three games, averaging 21 disposals and is building some solid form.

Riordan has been third at the club in the NEAFL for total disposals, second for contested possessions and first for tackles since arriving.

Pick 3: Kyle Dunkley (Melbourne)

Kyle Dunkley has played the last two games for the Demons and was quick to impress the club’s coaching staff.

The half forward had a quiet day against the Dogs, finishing with five disposals, but he snagged his first goal in AFL history and did so kicking over his brother Josh who was on the mark.

The 19-year-old will be a long term prospect for Melbourne and given how quickly he broke into the side, it’s a good sign for his future.

Pick 4: Michael Knoll (Sydney)

Sydney picked up Michael Knoll to add to their ruck depth, and they may soon call on him given Callum Sinclair, Darcy Cameron and Sam Naismith all on the sidelines.

Aliir Aliir has held down the ruck role in the last fortnight, but was no match for Matthew Kreuzer on the weekend.

He has been a consistent performer in the NEAFL for the Swans and would be ready to step in if called upon.

Pick 5: Lachlan Hosie (North Melbourne)

Hosie has walked into North Melbourne’s VFL team and immediately become on of their most reliable goal kickers.

He’s kicked eight goals in five games for the club since being picked out of Glenelg in the SANFL.

Hosie was the SANFL’s leading goal kicker early in the season and has continued that form for the Roos.

Pick 6: Ryan Gardner (Western Bulldogs)

Gardner was able to immediately step into the Bulldogs’ AFL side and play two games.

He was used at either end of the ground as a key position player and was familiar with the Dogs’ systems given he was picked out of their VFL team.

The 22-year-old has unfortunately suffered a knee injury that will sideline him for the remainder of 2019.

Pick 7: Will Snelling (Essendon)

Snelling would be right on the verge of an AFL debut, having put together a brilliant five weeks for the Bombers in the VFL.

A 33-disposal and eight tackle effort against Coburg a fortnight ago highlighted his skill in the midfield.

It’s hard to see him not getting a run for the Bombers at some stage this year.

Pick 8: Jack Mayo (St Kilda)

Mayo had his best game for Sandringham in the VFL on the weekend, finishing with 18 disposals and three inside 50s.

The West Australian mobile forward has averaged 10 disposals per game in the VFL.

Still only 19, Mayo has a lot of development left ahead of him.

Pick 9: Cam Sutcliffe (Port Adelaide)

Sutcliffe was brought in to play his first game for the Power on the weekend.

He played a very specific role having been brought in to tag Lachie Neale, but unfortunately this only fired up the Lions players leading to their fast start.

He played 104 games for the Dockers before being delisted at the end of 2018. He was signed by the Power in the SANFL before the mid-season draft opportunity.

Pick 11: Dillon O’Reilly (Fremantle)

The versatile key position tall forward has now played four games for Peel Thunder in the WAFL since getting picked up by the Dockers.

He hasn’t had a huge impact in the WAFL, but is still only 19 and developing.

O’Reilly kicked his first goal as a Docker on the weekend against East Perth.

Pick 13: Marlion Pickett (Richmond)

Pickett was picked up by the Tigers despite a serious finger injury that has held him out of all levels of footy.

He is currently rehabbing the injury at the club and is listed as being two to three weeks away.

Pickett was brought in out of the WAFL and the 27-year-old will likely make his Richmond VFL debut late in the season.

Pick 14: John Noble (Collingwood)

Noble made his debut for the Pies against the Eagles and didn’t look out of place across half back.

He’s made the transition from the forward line to the backline since joining Collingwood and his speed and ball use got him a senior opportunity.

Jeremy Howe told SEN Afternoons last week that Noble was well above VFL standard.

Pick 16: Cody Hirst (Sydney)

Hirst has averaged 11 disposals per game as a rebounding defender for the Swans in the NEAFL.

He has struggled with his ball use at times and hasn’t had a huge impact to this stage.

The 19-year-old has played six games for the Swans in the NEAFL, averaging three marks, three tackles and two inside 50s.
