The type of coach that St Kilda needs, according to Dal Santo

2019-07-16T11:40+10:00

Former St Kilda superstar Nick Dal Santo believes the club’s next coach must be an experienced one.

Alan Richardson resigned from his role as head coach this morning after overseeing just 43 wins from 126 games.

Dal Santo says the club must go down the path of getting a coach with AFL experience to see a form turn-around.

“I’ve spoken about this before, (they need) someone like a Ross Lyon,” he told SEN's Whateley.

“People jump at me saying no we don’t want Ross back but, I understand that.

“Ross is also contracted but someone, in my opinion, of that personality type (is someone the Saints should target).

“That strong, disciplined, buy-in, accountability style of coach is really important.

“Other clubs are in different situations I think where they can have someone to grow with the group.

“I’d love to see someone come in that has been proven at AFL level.

“They’ve got a game plan, a structure and a relationship with the playing group that can take them forward.”

Lyon is contracted at Fremantle until the end of next season.

Brett Ratten will take over as head coach of the Saints for the remainder of the 2019 season.

SEN's Sam McClure believes it is a two-horse race for the top job between Ratten and former North Melbourne coach Brad Scott.
