“Wasn’t up to AFL standard”: The off-field department that failed Gold Coast

2019-07-19T15:25+10:00

Former Gold Coast defender Campbell Brown says the failure to have a settled medical department cost the Suns during its infancy.

Brown believes the Suns’ medical team wasn’t at the required level compared to other AFL clubs and it contributed to key players suffering soft tissue injuries during the club's early years.
“It takes your body a little while to adapt to a training method and you just start to get used to it. The guy leaves then another guy comes in with a different philosophy,” he told SEN’s The Sporting Capital.

“We just had so many different voices over a three-year period which didn’t really give anyone a chance to settle in and learn their bodies.

"I attribute that to the massive amount of soft tissue injuries we had in our first two, three, four years – we had blokes doing hammys every single week.

“Dion Prestia, Harley Bennell, Charlie Dixon … we never got our best 22 on the park. The medical side of things up there wasn’t up to AFL standard. Players were going off and getting scans on Wednesday after a game on Saturday.

“How you’re meant to pick a team when you’ve three or four guys getting scans halfway in the week.”

Brown, 35, played 46 games for Gold Coast between 2011-2013.
