"We were powerless to stop it": Jenkins

2019-07-20T11:46+10:00

Adelaide key forward Josh Jenkins admits his side was “powerless” to stop Essendon’s run and carry in the second half of last night’s 21-point loss.

The Crows surrendered a 30-point lead in the defeat and Jenkins believes they took their foot off the accelerator in the third term.

“Any team you play against, you should expect them to make runs, rarely are you going to kick 12 out of 15 and just roll along,” Jenkins told SEN’s Crunch Time.

“We shouldn’t have been foolish enough to think it would be exactly like last week.

“Even at three quarter time, it’s a bit of a shock to the system, but it’s your home deck, everyone in the stadium is cheering for you guys and you’ve only got to win the quarter by one point.

“You shouldn’t even at that point be too stressed, clearly we just had no ability to arrest the momentum.”

Jenkins said the Crows’ forwards struggled to keep the ball in their forward half.

“I mentioned it to the forward group at half time, saying we’ve got to work harder to get more numbers to the contest,” he said.

“We’d kick it long to a contest and the ball spills and they were able to run at us and four Essendon players running downhill towards goal, it became impossible for us to stop.

“The defenders have to charge back to goal and it’s a very difficult situation to find yourself in and we found ourselves in it way, way too many times and we were powerless to stop it.”
