Top four chasing Giants claim derby honours

GWS has edged out cross-town rivals Sydney by two points to boost its hopes of a top four finish.

After a sluggish start, the Giants found their groove to take a 13-point lead into the main break.

It was a tight second half with the Swans determined to break a four-game losing streak.

Despite a valiant effort from John Longmire's men, GWS prevailed to record their 12th win of the season and their third on the trot.

The Moment: Hopper delivers

GWS ball magnet Jacob Hopper converted a vital goal late in the final quarter to his give his side some much-needed breathing space.

Hopper’s inventive snap was his third of the afternoon to make it a career-best haul for the midfielder.

The 22-year-old was one of GWS' best with 26 touches, four tackles, four inside 50s and seven marks.

The Young Gun: Ian Hill

Ian ‘Bobby’ Hill provided a sample of his exciting talent with a superb individual goal in today's Sydney Derby.

Hill, a cousin of Fremantle stars Brad and Stephen Hill, put on the after-burners and finished truly to the delight of the 16,000-strong crowd at Giants Stadium.

Taken with pick No.24 in last year’s draft, the Western Australian could prove to be a shrewd selection by the GWS recruiting team.

The 19-year-old has four goals from three appearances in 2019.

What it means for September?

GWS has temporarily jumped into fourth spot with fifth-placed Richmond to face Melbourne at the MCG tonight.

Leon Cameron’s side have a favourable run home with games against Hawthorn, the Western Bulldogs and Gold Coast to come.

Sydney will look to dent Port Adelaide’s top eight hopes when they clash next Saturday afternoon at the Adelaide Oval.
