Should this club throw Harley Bennell an AFL lifeline?

2019-08-07T17:58+10:00

Former Gold Coast and Fremantle speedster Harley Bennell is hoping a third club will throw him an AFL lifeline after his recent parting of ways with the Dockers.

The career of the former No.2 draft pick has been decimated by calf injuries, playing just two games in four years for Freo.

According to the Herald Sun, the 26-year-old will meet with a Victorian club later this month with Bennell’s manager Colin Young to provide an update on his physical and mental status.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast, Garry Lyon and Sam Edmund believe Richmond are a club that could get the best out of the talented, but injury-prone midfielder.

“There is one (club) that comes to mind,” Edmund said.

Lyon replied: “Richmond.”

The former Melbourne captain went on to explain why the Tigers are the right club to resurrect Bennell’s career.

“Most clubs are probably hoping they don’t take a punt on him, because if he works and Marlion Pickett works and Sydney Stack works, the rest of them look pretty silly," Lyon said.

Bennell has played 83 AFL games since debuting for the Suns in 2011.
