"They just need to maximise their time now": David King's huge trade idea

2019-08-10T12:10+10:00

David King has suggested a huge trade between North Melbourne and GWS that would shake the core of both teams.

There has been a lot of talk about North’s veteran players and whether the club should move them on to accelerate their next generation of players and bring in draft capital.

At the same time, King feels the Giants need to take full advantage of their premiership window and leave no stone unturned.

“I think the biggest decision (for GWS) … at the end of the season, they’ve got to find a way to not be going into a finals campaign with the ruck setup they’ve got now,” King told SEN’s Crunch Time.

“They’ve got a guy they’ve dragged back out of retirement and a guy that had a great patch last year in Dawson Simpson, but to me he’s not a premiership ruckman.

“You’ve got Todd Goldstein sitting at the Kangaroos that’s gettable.

“They’ve (GWS) got salary cap problems. Do they go to the Kangaroos and say we want Shaun Higgins and we want Goldstein?

“You pay them, you’ve got $2 million in your salary cap vacant at the moment, you sign them for three years, trade them to us and we’ll upsize the trade on the way back.

“Similar to the Brett Deledio situation. They got a first round pick for Deledio, Richmond. Logically he was a second rounder, but Richmond paid the wage.

“The Kangaroos could virtually turn some cash into elevated picks or more picks and get their five picks in the top 25 over that two-year block.

“Is it a disaster in the short-term for the Kangaroos? Yes. Goldstein is a star and Higgins has been their best player for the last couple of years, but you’ve got to do something from a Kangaroos point of view to shake the list and to get the rebuild toppling over the other side.

“And GWS cannot sit on their hands and just expect this group to just get it done next year.

“The picks are not a problem for (GWS). They’ve got heaps of picks. If Stephen Coniglio goes, they get a couple of more first round picks. They just need to maximise their time now. They can’t wait.”
