Barrett: Kangaroos "certainly rushed" Shaw appointment

2019-08-11T11:20+10:00

In the wake of North Melbourne recording its lowest score in club history, Damian Barrett believes the club rushed into appointing coach Rhyce Shaw too quickly.

After being appointed the interim coach of the Roos following Brad Scott’s departure, Shaw was given the permanent role two weeks ago.

Last night, Shaw’s men lost by 55 points against Geelong, only managing one goal for the game.

“That’s (performance) come in Rhyce Shaw’s 10th performance as a coach,” Barrett told Channel 9’s Sunday Footy Show.

“The sub-committee made the decision to find the new North Melbourne coach officially two weeks ago.

“That’s all well and good and he may well be the best coach that they could’ve found but I still didn’t have any idea at the time, I have less idea now why they felt the need to make that decision permanent when they did.

“They don’t know how he’s going to react to that adversity right now.

“They would’ve been able to see him react to that adversity and factor it into a decision-making process, had they just decided to let the season play out as the other clubs are doing who have interim coaches.

“He may well be the best person, I keep saying that and everything people say about him says that he could well have been in the mix anyway.

“But they certainly rushed the announcement officially of that decision.”

Shaw has now lost four of his past five games in charge of North Melbourne.

The Kangaroos face Port Adelaide on Saturday night at Marvel Stadium.
