“He looked happy": Riewoldt hails Steven’s match-winning Saints return

2019-08-12T12:27+10:00

The successful return of St Kilda star Jack Steven brought a smile to the face of club great Nick Riewoldt.

In his first game since Round 6 after an extended break to deal with his mental health, Steven booted three goals and had 22 disposals in the thrilling three-point win over Fremantle.

Riewoldt was delighted to see the four-time best and fairest winner back playing for the Saints having made just four appearances in an interrupted season.

“I had a big smile on my face yesterday watching Jack Steven run around … it was fantastic. It was just great to see him back out there,” Riewoldt told SEN Breakfast.

“The one thing he hadn’t lost was his burst, his burst away from a contested situation. He looked happy, it looked like he was enjoying himself.”

The performance of high-profile recruit Dan Hannebery also drew praise from Riewoldt.

Hannebery had 23 touches, six tackles, three clearances and kicked two early goals in his first victory in the red, white and black.

“Dan Hannebery as well, who’s been much maligned this year. His first half was huge,” Riewoldt said.

“He hasn’t forgotten how to play; his body has just let him down. Hopefully he can play the rest of the year out and be a big contributor next year.”

St Kilda take on Carlton at the MCG on Saturday in Brett Ratten's first match in charge against his former club.
