Pies at 5? Hasleby's top 7 current midfield groups in the AFL

2019-08-13T17:54+10:00

Former All-Australian midfielder Paul Hasleby has ranked who he believes are the top 7 best midfield groups in the AFL as of right now.

Which team has the deepest and most talented midfield in the competition, read Hasleby’s rankings from Sportsday WA below.

7. Brisbane

“They have been the surprise packet for everybody. Lachie Neale, Dayne Zorko, Jarryd Lyons has been amazing, I think Hugh McCluggage is going to be a very good player, Mitch Robinson and also Jarrod Berry.”

6. GWS

“They’ve had some injury concerns to key players and that has affected them, but Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly, Tim Taranto, Toby Greene, Lachie Whitfield – we know at their best they’re very strong.”

5. Collingwood

“On paper, these guys should be the best. Scott Pendlebury, Adam Treloar, Steele Sidebottom, Taylor Adams, Tom Phillips and Brodie Grundy from Collingwood, but I’ve got them in fifth because I don’t think collectively they’ve been as brilliant as some of the other teams this year.”

4. Richmond

“They’re a different type of midfield led by Dustin Maritn. They’ve got Kane Lambert who continues to improve all the time, Dion Prestia who’s having his best season, Trent Cotchin, Brandon Ellis and the like.”

3. Geelong

“I’ve got Geelong at three. Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood, Tim Kelly, Mitch Duncan, Sam Menegola. It’s a very strong group there.”

2. West Coast

“Elliot Yeo, Luke Shuey, Andrew Gaff, Dom Sheed and Jack Redden. They’ve got all bases covered.”

1. Western Bulldogs

“The number one midfield in the competition right now is the Western Bulldogs. Led by Marcus Bontempelli, Jack Macrae is a star, Josh Dunkley is becoming a star, Lachie Hunter, Tim English and Tom Liberatore. It gives them good coverage across many positions.”
