GWS veteran, former Richmond star set to retire

2019-08-15T08:54+10:00

Brett Deledio is set to announce his retirement from football, according to Channel 7’s Mark Stevens.

The classy 32-year-old midfielder has struggled with soft tissue injuries since moving to GWS from Richmond and is set to call time on his 274-game career.

“There will be a retirement today, an announcement imminent at GWS,” Stevens said on SEN Breakfast.

“Brett Deledio will be retiring today. I believe it will be an announcement that he will finish at the end of the season.

“I don’t think he’s given up complete of hope of getting back from that calf injury but it is a three-to-four-week injury so I doubt we’ll see Brett Deledio back for the Giants this year.

“Sadly, I think his career is done. It’s pretty sad, a great career.”

Deledio was drafted by the Tigers with pick 1 in 2004 and went on to win the 2005 NAB Rising Star award. He played 243 times in the yellow and black, and was a two-time All-Australian and two-time Jack Dyer Medallist at Richmond.

The Kyabram and Murray Bushrangers product joined the Giants at the end of 2016 but has been restricted to just 14 games at this second club.
