Collingwood assistant coach Robert Harvey will reportedly interview for the vacant St Kilda coaching job in what would be a fairytale return for the club great.
The four-time St Kilda best and fairest winner will face stiff competition from caretaker coach Brett Ratten, who boasts a 3-1 record since replacing Alan Richardson in July.
Harvey unsuccessfully pitched for the St Kilda job in 2011 with Scott Watters getting the nod following Ross Lyon’s sudden departure.
If the dual Brownlow Medallist is knocked back once again, former St Kilda star Nick Dal Santo feels that could have major repercussions on Harvey’s chances of one day returning to Moorabbin.
“If Harvs doesn’t get this job, I don’t know if there’s a third chance – he may never come back to St Kilda,” Dal Santo told SEN Afternoons.
“You’d love to get your good players back to your football club in some capacity.”
Dal Santo believes St Kilda’s sub-committee entrusted with selecting the next senior coach face a difficult decision.
“I feel the theme from St Kilda supporters is they’re loving Ratts,” he added.
“But all of a sudden, the club legend gets brought back into the mix. Who do you want? That’s a tough situation."
Harvey played 383 games for the Saints and is a member of the club’s Team of the Century.
