Blues hold off Saints in MCG thriller

Carlton has held off St Kilda in a fantastic game of footy at the MCG, winning by 10 points.

It was a big day for the club, with captain Patrick Cripps celebrating game 100, Dale Thomas announcing his retirement and the game being David Teague’s first after getting the job.

The Saints battled hard all day and took their chances in front of goal, but the Blues outplayed them for the majority of the afternoon.

The Moment: Harry McKay kicks “goal of the year” to seal the game

With the game in the balance, time running out and the lead swinging like a yoyo, both teams needed a knock out blow.

It was young Carlton forward Harry McKay who would deliver, snapping a goal off a few steps from 50m out.

He’s struggled with his goal kicking all year, but he found it when he needed it and legend Dermott Brereton loved it.

“I think I’ve just seen goal of the year! That is insane! He’s done that off three steps at this stage of the game. It’s insane!” Brereton told Fox Footy.

The Talking Point: The Teague train gets rolling

Carlton coach David Teague picked up his first official win at the helm this afternoon and all of the signs of the future were on display.

Without their two key defenders in Liam Jones (throat) and Jacob Weitering (calf), it was Levi Casboult who stood up down back, while Dale Thomas, in his final game on the MCG, was brilliant as well.

The old guard led the way, with Marc Murphy and Matthew Kreuzer controlling the game in the midfield, while youngster Paddy Dow played his best game of 2019.

There’s a lot for Blues fans to be excited about.

What’s next?

Carlton finish their season down the highway, taking on Geelong at GMHBA Stadium. The Saints meanwhile head to the SCG to face Sydney. Both teams will be hoping to finish on a high, heading into 2020 with new coaches.
