Former number two draft pick, Harley Bennell, has been linked to four Melbourne-based clubs and the source of his ongoing calf injuries reportedly discovered.
Bennell and the Dockers parted ways after mutually agreeing to arrangments for him to be released from his contract.
“Four clubs are interested in exploring the possibility,” Sam Edmund told SEN Breakfast.
Injury ridden Bennell had surgery in Brisbane last month with Geelong-based sports physiotherapist Peter Stanton, but a Victorian club has stated they’ve found the cause after five years.
“One (team) even had a really close look at him and then reckon medically they’ve found the tendon pressing on the nerve there,” Edmund said.
Bennell played 81 games for Gold Coast before being traded to the Dockers, where he only made two senior appearances for Fremantle.
“If you can get to the bottom of his soft tissue injury and keep him on the track, then you’ve got a good chance of turning him into the player that we all know he can be,” Lyon said.
During his time at the Suns, Bennell finished second in the club’s best and fairest at just the age of 20.
He played alongside Richmond’s Tom Lynch for his five seasons up on the Gold Coast and the ex-Suns captain could only praise his talent.
“Some of the games he played up there and he’s 21 years old and he was getting best on grounds,” Lynch told SEN Breakfast.
“When he’s fit enough and ready, he’s a super player and would really add to any side.
“Hopefully he gets a bit of interest and gets his calf right, has a great career that he should have with all the talent he has,” Lynch said.
With Bennell departing and now the recently let go head coach Ross Lyon joining him, it is rumoured that Geelong’s gun midfielder Tim Kelly may now be more inclined to head to Fremantle.
Edmund read between the lines after the partner of Kelly liked a tweet on social media informing that Lyon had been sacked.
“Maybe it was well received in the Kelly household and maybe the door is ajar for a move to the Dockers,” Lyon said.
“Maybe he is more open to it then he previously was.”
Aaron Sandilands played his last game for the Dockers on the weekend after 271 games, but the hanging up of the boots has opened up the number one ruck position which Sean Darcy will look to cement his name on.
Darcy re-signed last year and has another year left before being out of contract, but Edmund said the second-string ruckman wasn’t overly happy last season with his club.
“The ruckman was upset this time last year over the club’s operations and the departure of Lachie Neale,” Edmund said.
Edmund also brought light to more Fremantle trade rumour movement with talks that Brandon Matera is potentially seeking a move. He is contracted with the Dockers until 2020.
"Just a whisper that he (Matera) might be looking to move as well," Edmund said.
