"Expect him to be traded": Port premiership player comments on Ryder future

2019-08-20T10:00+10:00

Former Port Adelaide defender Darryl Wakelin believes Paddy Ryder will be at a different club next year.

Speculation has been mounting on Ryder’s future this year, with the latest reports from The Age suggesting that the out-of-contract 31-year-old has attracted “significant interest” from his old club Essendon.

Wakelin believes three clubs could offer Ryder a two-year deal, which he is reportedly seeking.

“I can’t see Ryder being there (at Port Adelaide next year),” Wakelin told SEN’s Time On.

“They can’t sign (Scott) Lycett on a five-year deal and not use him.

“They know that Ryder can, with injuries, fall over at any stage.

“Expect him to be traded. I would expect someone like GWS or Gold Coast or maybe even his old club Essendon to offer maybe a two-year deal.

“That’s going to be pretty attractive for Paddy and his family.”

The Age also reports that St Kilda is another club who is showing interest in Ryder, as it looks for options to back up emerging ruckman Rowan Marshall.

Port Adelaide has reportedly only offered Ryder a one-year deal despite him pursuing a two-year offer.

The Power host Fremantle at Adelaide Oval on Sunday and must win to have a chance of securing a finals spot.
