Gossage, Hasleby float potential replacements for Lyon at Fremantle

2019-08-20T12:20+10:00

AFL Nation commentator and SEN regular Tim Gossage believes Collingwood assistant coach Justin Longmuir is in the box seat to replace Ross Lyon as coach of Fremantle.

Reports have suggested Lyon has been sacked by the Dockers, with CEO Steve Rosich also on the way out.

Gossage suggests Longmuir, who played 139 games for Fremantle, will be the club's new senior coach in 2020.

“I would not be surprised if Justin Longmuir isn’t certainly the man to replace them,” he told SEN’s Whataley.

“Again with that association, he’s intellectual property from West Coast, he’s intellectual property from Collingwood - two powerhouses of the competition.

“The fact is he’s still well thought of down in Fremantle.

“Of course we’re waiting for the official word but if and when it does come through, I’m sure Fremantle will be acting pretty quickly to move on from this day and will move quickly to sure up a coach and I think Justin Longmuir would be a 10-to-one favourite.”

But fellow AFL Nation commentator Paul Hasleby has suggested St Kilda interim coach Brett Ratten would be more suited for the top job.

“I’m a good friend of Justin Longmuir’s, played with him as well but I’m a believer, whenever there’s a position available … you’ve got to go through the process and find the very best candidate out there,” he told SEN Afternoons.

“To choose one is just not right in my opinion. A Brett Ratten might be the one. He’d be at the top of my list.”

Under Lyon, the Dockers have now missed finals for four straight years.
