The club that could benefit from Lyon's style of coaching

Ross Lyon’s sacking from Fremantle has added further intrigue to the AFL coaching merry-go-round.

In a bombshell decision, the Dockers severed ties with Lyon on Tuesday with still a year remaining on his lucrative contract.

The 52-year-old brought immediate success to both Freo and St Kilda, but the ultimate success would elude him having made four Grand Finals between 2009-2013.

Speaking on SEN Breakfast, Tim Watson believes GWS is a club that could do with Lyon’s tactical acumen.

“We know what Ross Lyon is like with a certain type of player, I don’t think he’s necessarily the right coach for a young group of developing players,” Watson said.

“But if you’ve got players who have been around the mark for a while, and GWS has, that style and what we know he implements, the spike that he gets in performance, he has displayed that in two coaching stints now at St Kilda and then Fremantle.

“Whether you like that style of play or not it’s been successful … would he not be a reasonable fit for GWS?

“I’m not trying to get Leon Cameron out of that job, but I just think if Caroline Wilson, a senior journalist like her, says what she did (Cameron being "on the nose" with the AFL) there’s something to that.”

Garry Lyon agreed, saying the Giants have got by on talent without having a clear footballing identity.

“What is the criticism of the Giants after six years? You don’t know how they’re going to play,” Lyon said.

“They play on talent … and I know that’s being disrespectful to Leon (Cameron) because he’s done really good things, but still after six years you can’t put your hat on it and say: ‘This is how the Giants play their footy’.

“System over talent is always the argument and debate about the GWS Giants.”

GWS coach Cameron is set to come out of contract heading into the 2020 season.
