Coniglio responds to McLachlan’s pleas to stay a Giant

2019-08-26T15:35+10:00

Stephen Coniglio says recent comments made by AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan regarding his future won’t affect whether he remains at GWS.

McLachlan stated he would prefer to see Coniglio re-sign with the Giants in the face of big money offers from Hawthorn and Carlton.

The league chief was heavily criticised for voicing his views on the 25-year-old’s contract situation.

“It was interesting. I’ve met Gil a few times. Everyone has their views as to what I should do,” Coniglio said.

“Obviously being the AFL CEO, some people might’ve had some criticism on him but I think everyone’s entitled to their own opinion.

“At the end of the day I have to be happy and comfortable with the call that I make. Nah, I won’t (let McLachlan influence me), for sure.”

The star Giant remains “comfortable” with where things stand having yet to recommit to the club beyond this season.

"I actually haven’t been reading too much, I’ve tried to stay away from it as much as possible," he said.

"Haven’t seen too much of it. I think the thing in my head is I’ve been grateful to have had options.

"But in terms of the figures, I haven’t read too much into that. I’m happy with how everything sits at the moment, and comfortable."

Coniglio is in Melbourne for scans and further assessment on his injured knee. He is in a race against time to be fit for GWS’ finals campaign.
