Blues dealt blow in chase for gun Swan

2019-08-28T15:30+10:00

Carlton’s hopes of snaring Sydney small forward Tom Papley have hit a major snag.

According to AFL.com.au.’s Callum Twomey, Papley is contracted to the Swans until the end of 2023.

The 23-year-old is thought to be coming out of contract at the end of the 2020 season.

The Blues and several Victorian clubs are understood to be keen on the 23-year-old livewire.

“There’s been a lot of talk about Tom Papley’s future at the Swans,” Twomey told SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“It has been widely believed that he would be signed to the Swans until the end of next year, leaving one year to go on his contract.

“In the middle of last year, the Swans extended his contract for an extra year through to the end of 2021 and that contract also included a trigger clause as I understand it for an extra two years, which he has met.

“So he’s actually contracted to the Swans until the end of 2023 – four more years after this one, making him a pretty hard player to prise out of a club given that’s such a long-term commitment.”

Papley booted 37 goals in a career-best 2019 season.
