AFL greats hit out at "stupid" and "ridiculous" rule

2019-09-16T17:25+10:00

Terry Wallace has labelled the rule that awards a player a free kick in front of goal after the initial goal is kicked as “stupid” and “the worst in football”.

Toby Greene’s opening goal for GWS in Saturday night’s semi-final against Brisbane was immediately followed by a Jeremy Finlayson free kick that he duly converted from the pocket.

Finlayson and Lions defender Darcy Gardiner were involved in a skirmish after Greene's opener with the umpire awarding the Giants forward a shot at goal.

The goal was crucial in the end result with GWS getting home by three points in a thrilling contest at the Gabba.

Wallace believes the team awarded the free kick should take possession in the middle of the ground and not be given another shot on goal.

“Can you get one rule changed for me? The rule that gives you two goals in a row – it’s the worst in football,” Wallace told SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“You can’t just hand a bloke another kick right in front of goal that just guarantees two goals. Give the ball back in the middle of the ground – it is the most stupid rule.

“I don’t know when it came in or how it came in.”

Bob Murphy echoed Wallace’s thoughts on the contentious rule.

“That is a ridiculous rule. It’s a free kick and a 100-metre penalty,” Murphy added.

GWS face Collingwood for a spot in the Grand Final at the MCG on Saturday.
