“I nearly cried”: Ex-Swan describes feeling of breaking 42-year flag hoodoo

Former Sydney utility Troy Luff has spoken of the joy he felt after breaking his 42-year long premiership hoodoo.

Luff snapped a run of 10 Grand Final defeats by helping UNSW-Eastern Suburbs to victory over St George in the Sydney AFL competition division two decider last weekend.

The 49-year-old booted two goals in the eight-point win and admitted he was overcome with emotion once the final siren went.

“I started playing football as a seven-year-old in the Gippsland area,” Luff told SEN’s Bob and Andy.

“After 42 years of playing football and losing 10 Grand Finals, finally, a couple of days ago, I actually know what it feels like to win a premiership – it was awesome.

“It’s obviously not an AFL Grand Final but it doesn’t matter, I’ve finally got the monkey off the back – and everyone knows it too. I didn’t realise how many people knew that I’d never won one.

“When the siren went, and I knew that I’d finally won a premiership – I nearly cried.”

Luff played 155 games for the Swans and was part of the side that played in the 1996 Grand Final loss to North Melbourne.
