Should Ablett play on next year? Sheahan weighs in

2019-09-20T11:00+10:00

Veteran AFL journalist Mike Sheahan believes Geelong champion Gary Ablett should not play on next year.

The dual Brownlow Medallist has kicked 33 goals in 23 games this year but remains out-of-contract with his future up in the air.

“I don’t think he should play on next year,” Sheahan told SEN Breakfast.

“I think the signs are there that he’s clearly no longer the player that he was.

“The telltale signs for me was last week, he had two set shots for goal from 40 (metres out) and didn’t make the distance with either.

“If I were his advisor over the summer, I’d be saying to Gaz: ‘You’ve been the player of the generation, you’ve done enough, give it away.’”

In terms of tonight’s clash against Richmond, Sheahan feels if Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood perform well, the Cats are in with a big chance.

“I’m saying to you if Dangerfield and Selwood are in the best three, Geelong will win,” he said.

“The two blokes at Geelong are so important to the chemistry of that team when they play well. We’ve seen it in the two finals so far.”

The Cats will aim to book a spot in the Grand Final with a win over the Tigers at the MCG.
