Rowell and Anderson can lead Suns off the bottom: Pickering

2019-09-21T15:53+10:00

AFL player agent Liam Pickering believes the combination of Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson could be the two players who lead Gold Coast off the bottom of the ladder.

The duo are likely to be the top two picks in the upcoming National Draft, with the Suns holding the first selection and seem likely to be gifted the second from the AFL.

Rowell had an enormous game in the NAB League Grand Final on Saturday afternoon, finishing with 44 disposals and two goals.

Pickering has been tracking him closely for a few years and can’t speak highly enough about him.

“He was best on the ground as a bottom-ager, on grand final day he was best on the ground, he’s come out today and been best on ground. This kid, every time he steps up just shows what he can do. He is a star,” Pickering told AFL Nation.

“He’s a great kid and the sort of kid that I think if he gets up to the Gold Coast, and he takes (projected pick two in the draft) Noah Anderson with him, those two could lead that joint.

“Rowell’s dad is from Brisbane.”

Pickering believes it is smart for the Queensland teams to target Victorian draftees who haven’t grown up in metropolitan Melbourne.

“It’s a smart way to do it. It’s what Brisbane’s recruiting strategy is,” he said.

“When everyone was jumping out of the boat up there, they went and got the Victorian country kids.

“They’re moving anyway. They don’t know any different. They’re not Melbourne private school kids that have been brought up around Melbourne.

“It’s not a bad philosophy, especially when you’re talking about the clear number one and number two picks.”
