Gold Coast made "one of the greatest mistakes of the year": Lyon

2019-09-25T08:28+10:00

Garry Lyon has described Gold Coast’s decision to delist midfielder Jarryd Lyons has one of the biggest errors of the 2019 season.

The Suns made the surprising decision to cut Lyons last year, who was almost immediately picked up by Brisbane.

He played 24 games for the second-placed Lions, averaging 24 disposals, six tackles, six clearances and four inside 50s.

“That was one of the greatest mistakes of the year, that,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast.

“No matter how you spin it from a Gold Coast point of view.

“You can tell me about his sprint repeat numbers and his spread numbers, I’ll just tell you about his year.”

The Suns made a number of poor choices last off-season, including one of the worst pick-swap trades of all-time.

A trading of future first-round picks, again with Brisbane, has backfired enormously, with them essentially exchanging pick 17 for pick 19 in 2018, as well as picks 19 and 42 this year.

Other mistakes include trading pick two for Lachie Weller back in 2017.

They will likely receive pick two as a compensation pick in this year’s draft, despite these constant mistakes.
